A team of us created this web site as a service learning project for the Chula Vista Block credential program. One of the assignments for our Science methods course was that we each serve others and the community through a self-selected, peer evaluated avenue. When our professor announced that we needed to create a service learning project for our Science methods course, I decided to design a website for current and future credential students. I wanted to share information on what we had done in our program in hopes of informing upcoming credential students about their future journey. Luckily a group of 2000-2001 student teachers decided to join me in working together to create this website.
The team of student teachers in the Chula Vista credential program consisted of the following: Amanda Chapman, Christina Curtis, Edrick Macalaguim, Kara Rockhold & myself. We also had assistance from Rebecca Odivina, Neil Parrish, and Shirley Parrish with pictures and graphics. Finally, two of our professors, Cathy Pohan and Randy Yerrick, gave us guidance throughout the project.
I worked with the other student teachers on a daily basis. We were enrolled in the same credential program together for 10 months and this was an assignment we completed for the program during that timeframe.
Working with others provided a great benefit for this project because it allowed us to split up the workload. I could focus my attention on a small part of the project instead of becoming overwhelmed with doing the work for the whole project. If I had completed the project by myself, I would not have had the time to develop it so completely.
In addition, this project gave me the opportunity to share my web design skills with an inexperienced group of people. Leading this group of fellow students in the creation of the site allowed my professors and future employers to see my leadership qualities, as well as my web design skills.
I enjoyed working with this group for many reasons. Personally I think it is always easier to work with a group because more ideas are formed and more people share the workload. This project was no exception. Each member of the group contributed something to create this amazing project that could not have happened had I worked alone.

Reflection
In the Holocaust Wiki Project, participating grade 5 students create a family from an assigned country that affected by the Holocaust. Next, they create a branching simulation (choose your own adventure) and bring their families through the different stages of the Holocaust as they apply to that family’s specific country. This project is done completely online and students use TikiWiki as a publishing tool.
I created this project with the help of Bernie Dodge as a consultant and advisor. During out initial meeting, fellow EDTEC graduate student Karl Richter participated. Throughout this project, I met with Bernie 2 to 3 times and exchanged a number of emails. Bernie also observed me while I implemented the project.
Working with Bernie on this project felt very comfortable. Because we had worked together in the past, we understood each others’ styles which allowed us to state ideas and opinions without worrying about what the other would think. Bernie actually gave me the original idea for this project.
In addition to helping me develop the idea for the project, there were other benefits to working with Bernie. Most importantly, this communication allowed me to bounce ideas off of someone and focus a complex idea. Since this was generally untouched ground, I wanted to be sure my decisions were instructionally and pedagogically sound.
I value this experience of working with others on a project. Bernie gave me insight into instructional design that I may not have otherwise had. Despite the fact that I did most of the actual development on my own, I always knew there was someone there to help guide me if I got stuck or could not figure out the next step.
