Biography
My Background
...On any given day of the year, it is summer somewhere in the world...
I was fortunate to grow up in La Jolla, CA, as a beach loving kid. Living so close to the Pacific Ocean, my interests in life were centered on the sport of surfing and a fascination with the U.S. Coast Guard. Through both surfing and the Coast Guard, I have been able to travel throughout California, the East Coast, Hawaii, American Samoa, Mexico, and Brazil. The highlight of my surfing career was in 1997 when I competed as a member of the world famous Windansea Surf Club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in an international surfing contest to support surfing in the Olympics.
I graduated from the University of Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 1993 with a degree in History. My initial plan was to pursue a teaching career. Wanting to see the world and serve our country first, I combined my love of the ocean and adventure and joined the Coast Guard at the age of 27. 14 years later, I find myself on the verge of graduating from San Diego State University with a Masters Degree in Educational Technology (EDTEC).
Why EDTEC?
As the son of San Diego Unified school teachers, I grew up with the joy of teaching and the inspirational role teaching can play in someone's life. Serving in the Coast Guard has reinforced my beliefs of the value of good instruction in supporting efficiency, safety, job satisfaction and retention. EDTEC is something I believe that I can use throughout my career and different fields I may enter.
Future Goals
I graduated from UCSB without ever using a computer. Now, as I complete my advanced degree in EDTEC, I have the opportunity to leverage technology to help improve tomorrow's Coast Guard training and performance. I look forward to my next assignment at Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma, CA. My longterm career goals is to complete my 20 years in the Coast Guard, retire, and return to San Diego with my family and a second career in the field of EDTEC.
