Program Information

The Department of Educational Technology at San Diego State University offers the following three programs through distance education via the Internet:

These programs are for anyone who wishes to develop or enhance professional skills in instructional technology. Our students come from a variety of settings including education, business, the military, and media production. They represent a host of other backgrounds ranging from lifeguard to accountant and graphic artist to retired executive. Our graduates are headed for, or currently work in the areas of public and private education, corporate or military training, performance technology related industries, and educational or instructional multimedia product development. Certificate in Instructional Technology

To receive a certificate in Instructional Technology, candidates must complete the following 15 units of coursework:

EDTEC 540, Educational Technology
EDTEC 541, Web Multimedia Development
EDTEC 544, Instructional Design

and 6 units selected from:
EDTEC 561, Adv. Web Multimedia Development
EDTEC 570, Adv. Teaching with Technology
EDTEC 572, Technology for Course Delivery
EDTEC 590, Evaluation Techniques for the Performance Technologist

Distance Education Certificate
To receive the certificate in Distance Education, candidates must meet the departmental and university admission requirements, receive a satisfactory score on the GRE (950 combined score on the verbal and quantitative portions) and must complete the following four core courses, as well as one elective course from the list below:

Note: The Distance Education certificate classes do not count towards the MA degree if the certificate is received.

Instructional Design Certificate

This certificate targets learning professionals who want to hone their instructional design, facilitation, consultation, or project management skills. Graduates of this program take the lead in conceptualizing and producing a wide variety of learning interventions---from self-paced "overview" tutorials to complex electronic performance systems to podcasts and vodcasts. Students tend to have high-level roles in the learning enterprise, no matter the setting in which they happen to work (K-12, higher education, business, nonprofit, military, government).

Prerequisites
Prerequisites include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution--with a grade point average of at least 2.85 in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, as well as a satisfactory score on the verbal and quantitative (typically 950 combined) sections of the GRE General Test.

Program of Study
To receive a certificate in Instructional Design, candidates must complete a minimum of18 units and maintain a 3.0 (B) grade point average (earning no less than a "C" in any class). The 18 units of coursework are detailed below:

Required: 9 units

EDTEC 540, Educational Technology
EDTEC 541, Web Multimedia Development
EDTEC 544, Instructional Design

Electives: 9 units (600- and 700-level courses only), as approved by the program director or department chair. ED 690, ED 795A, and ED 795 do not count as certificate electives.

Note: The Instructional Design certificate classes do not count towards the MA degree if the certificate is received.

Master of Arts Degree
To receive the Masters Degree with an emphasis in Educational Technology, students can apply the same five courses as required in the Certificate in Instructional Technology, three required courses (ED 690, ED 795A, and ED 795B) from the College of Education, and four additional elective courses (minimum of 9 units must be 600-700 level courses) from a selection matched to individual interests. The Distance Education and Instructional Design certificates are graduate-level certificates and require that you apply to both the university and to the department. The GRE is also required for both. See http://edtec.sdsu.edu/distance/apply.htm for more information.
